  • If you’re 9001 certified, what are the steps you should take to get AS9100 certified?

The first step is to purchase the AS9100D / ISO 9001:2015 Standard [See Platinum’s Standards tab on this website for details] and begin a review of the AS9100-specific requirements (anything in bold italic font).

The good news is that the core programs of the ISO 9001 Standard have very little or no additional requirements in them. For example, the only additional items in sections 9.0 Performance Evaluation are some specifics of information that must be monitored for customer satisfaction, there are NO changes to how you perform or record internal process audits, one additional Management Review input that requires tracking of on-time delivery performance and one additional output to include risks identified during the review. In section 10.0 Improvement, when determining the cause of a nonconformity you can now include, as applicable, those related to human factors. There is a requirement to flow down corrective action (CA) to suppliers when necessary and taking specific actions when timely and effective CA are not achieved. Other additional items from section 10.0 include a requirement to maintain documented info that defines the nonconformity and CA management process (usually a procedure, flow chart or work instruction), and you must monitor the implementation of improvement activities and evaluate the effectiveness of the results (did it make it better? what was the improvement?).

Once you understand the additional “bold” requirements you will need to either add some documentation to your ISO 9001 documented system or update the existing documentation with the additional requirements / how you meet the additional requirements.  After you have updated your system and verified it using your internal audit  and management review process, you will need to get a quote for AS9100D registration services and schedule your Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit (you cannot simply upgrade to AS9100D at your next ISO 9001 surveillance or recertification audit). The ISO 9001 Third Party Audit Process does look and feel different than the AS9100D Audit. With an Aerospace Audit, the audit reporting is recorded in a database called OASIS, and each key process of your organization will be audited and recorded using a Process Evaluation Assessment Report (PEAR).
